Huperzine-A is unusual among supplement ingredients in having a mechanism identical in kind to a class of prescription medicine, which cuts both ways.
The mechanism
Huperzine-A is a sesquiterpene alkaloid from Chinese club moss that reversibly inhibits acetylcholinesterase, the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine at the synapse. Blocking it leaves more acetylcholine available, and acetylcholine is central to memory encoding and attention. This is the same broad mechanism as donepezil and related prescription medicines used in Alzheimer's disease. The mechanism is real, which is the strongest thing that can be said for it and also the reason for caution.
Why the dose matters unusually much
Research doses are measured in micrograms rather than milligrams, and the useful range is narrow. Too little does nothing. Too much produces cholinergic effects - nausea, increased salivation, sweating, slowed heart rate, muscle twitching, vivid or disturbed dreams. A product that does not disclose its Huperzine-A content is asking you to take an active compound at an unknown dose, daily and indefinitely. That is a legitimate reason to request the supplement facts panel before buying and to start at a reduced dose.

See Cognizil PricingCycling and cautions
Because it is an enzyme inhibitor with a long duration of action, many practitioners suggest cycling rather than continuous daily use, though the evidence base for any particular schedule is thin. An undisclosed dose makes that judgement impossible to make sensibly. Caution is warranted alongside cholinergic or anticholinergic medication and beta-blockers, and in bradycardia, asthma, epilepsy or gastrointestinal ulceration. It should not be combined with prescription cholinesterase inhibitors.
Pros and cons
Pros
- A real, well-characterised mechanism rather than a speculative one
- Directly relevant to memory and attention via acetylcholine
- Small quantities, so it does not crowd the formula
Cons
- Research doses are micrograms with a narrow useful range
- Amount not disclosed, making dose judgement impossible
- Cholinergic side effects including bradycardia and vivid dreams
- Cautions in asthma, epilepsy and alongside several drug classes
