Green tea is one of the few foods that naturally contains a well-evidenced cognitive combination.

What is in it

Caffeine, at roughly a third to a half of coffee's content per cup. L-theanine, an amino acid largely unique to tea, which produces relaxed alertness and has been studied in combination with caffeine. Catechins, principally epigallocatechin gallate, which are polyphenols with antioxidant activity in vitro. Small amounts of other compounds including theobromine. Matcha, being powdered whole leaf, delivers higher concentrations of all of these.

The research

The caffeine-theanine combination has the clearest evidence, with studies reporting improved attention-switching and reduced jitteriness relative to caffeine alone. Green tea extract has been studied for cognitive measures with mixed results. Observational research in populations with high green tea consumption has associated intake with better cognitive outcomes, with the usual confounding caveats. EGCG bioavailability is limited and much of the in vitro antioxidant work does not translate.

Practical points

Brewing temperature affects both catechin extraction and bitterness - water off the boil, around eighty degrees, is the usual recommendation for green tea. Steeping time affects caffeine and catechin content. Green tea contains tannins that inhibit non-haem iron absorption, so drinking it with meals matters for anyone with low iron status - between meals is better. High-dose green tea extract supplements have been associated with liver injury in case reports, which is a reason to prefer the drink.

Key takeaways

  • Tea's caffeine-theanine combination is what distinguishes it from coffee
  • EGCG bioavailability is limited and in vitro antioxidant findings translate poorly
  • Tannins inhibit non-haem iron absorption, so timing matters for low iron status
  • High-dose green tea extract has been associated with liver injury in case reports

Where a supplement fits here

If you have worked through the behavioural and medical options above and want to add a supplement, Cognizil is a stimulant-free liquid formula available from the Cognizil official website. We would rather you addressed sleep, activity and any underlying medical cause first — those have stronger evidence than anything in a bottle, including ours.
