Fatigue and Sleepiness Are Not the Same Thing

Disclosure: cogniszil.com is the Cognizil official website and earns revenue from product orders placed through this site. Content is written by our editorial team and cites public research sources. These two words get used interchangeably and they point toward completely different investigations.

The distinction

Sleepiness is the propensity to fall asleep - the difficulty staying awake in passive situations, the head-nodding in a meeting. Fatigue is a lack of energy or motivation, a sense of exhaustion, without necessarily any tendency to fall asleep. A person with severe fatigue may lie down and be unable to sleep at all. Clinically these point in different directions, and conflating them is a common source of misdirected effort.

Causes of sleepiness

Insufficient sleep duration is the most common. Sleep apnoea and other sleep-disordered breathing. Narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia, which are less common but real. Circadian misalignment. Sedating medication including antihistamines, some antidepressants and some blood pressure medication. Sleepiness with adequate sleep duration is the pattern that most warrants a sleep study.

Causes of fatigue

A much longer list: anaemia and iron deficiency, thyroid dysfunction, diabetes, depression and anxiety, chronic infection, autoimmune conditions, medication side effects, deconditioning, chronic pain, kidney or liver disease, and post-viral syndromes. Fatigue that persists for weeks, particularly with other symptoms or without an obvious explanation, deserves a medical assessment including basic bloods rather than a supplement. Which word describes your experience is genuinely useful information for a clinician.

Key takeaways

  • Sleepiness is difficulty staying awake; fatigue is exhaustion without sleep propensity
  • Sleepiness despite adequate sleep duration most warrants a sleep study
  • Fatigue has a long differential including anaemia, thyroid and depression
  • Which word describes your experience is useful clinical information

A note on Cognizil

We publish this blog on the Cognizil official website, so treat anything we say about our own product as coming from an interested party. What we can do is be specific: Cognizil is a liquid dropper supplement taken once daily, and it makes no claim to treat, cure or prevent any disease. It also contains St. John’s Wort, so if you take any prescription medicine, read our interaction guide before the sales page. If you want the drawbacks first, start with Cognizil reviews and complaints.
